DrinkUp Staycation - Menorca Experimental

When a bar, restaurant and hotel group with such an exacting eye for detail and a track record for excellence opens a new venue – it’s time to catch a flight.

The Experimental Cocktail Club first opened its bar room doors in Paris back in 2007 and has since grown and grown to now include cocktail bars in London, wine bars in New York City, beach bars in Ibiza and outstanding hotels in Paris, Verbier, London and now – Menorca.
This island is definitely the hidden gem of the Balearics. It’s calmer, quieter and arguably much more chic than its sister islands – and Menorca Experimental is the epitome of all these descriptive words.

In fact – the whole travel experience is pretty charming. Flights to Menorca from London are a mere two hours. They’re all at really reasonable times. There’s no one in the airport and so when we arrived – there was no queue for taxis.
A short 20 minute drive (that will set you back around €20) into the middle of the island, down a very inconspicuous track and you’re there. Deposited safely into a sun-drenched oasis of calm.

Our flight got us in just in time for lunch. How nice. Ice cold Provencal Rosé and some of the tastiest small plates we’ve had in a while. Food comes out of the kitchen when it’s ready from chef Sylvain Roucayrol who is relying on locally sourced ingredients to pair with his Basque-country heritage. The ripeness of the fruit and vegetables and the freshness of the fish is worth the two hour flight alone.

Just as much care is taken over the drinks – with a short but succinct cocktail list including some delicious, thirst-quenching, poolside-pleasers and a cracking wine list. There are two outside bars – one on the main terrace and a smaller spot down by the salt-water pool both mixing drinks throughout the day to ensure you’re kept extremely well lubricated. Everything out here is on point – the muted colour of the loungers, the design on the Turkish towels all chosen to perfectly compliment the dusty, bleached sandstone and the understated green of the pines.

The interiors are just as dreamy with a colour palette of burnt reds, pale pinks, sage green and flashes of cobalt blue. The beds are huge and the linen is deliciously soft and the bathrooms – well. No expense spared here. There’s lots of lovely touches throughout the rooms including embroidered robes and slippers, woven baskets to use at the pool and a very well stocked mini bar. We wholeheartedly approve.

If you’re going for more than a couple of days, you might want to look to rent your own car to explore more of the island and actually see the sea - but if you’re looking for somewhere peaceful and picture-perfect for a weekend break – we can’t think of anywhere better!

DrinkUp flew from London Southend, but there are regular flights from all London airports to Mahon. Rooms start from €232 a night.
